Olive Oil Skin & Hair Care

I really can’t get enough of this stuff! It’s always my go-to face wash, body wash, moisturiser, hair conditioner and cooking oil (and anything else I might need it for).

Ever since using this oil, my skin is softer, my face is clearer and my hair is so much more manageable! I really, really recommend trying to incorporate this oil into your routine, if you haven’t already tried it!

Olive Oil Face (And Body) Cleansing:
Use just the olive oil: pour some on hands and massage into face for a few minutes, really allowing the oil to sink into the skin (I usually do this in the shower so I can rinse it off easier) and rinse off.
If you need more exfoliation (and for really soft skin), add sugar or sea salt!

You can also use the oil more intensely using the oil-cleansing method; massage the oil into your skin and take a hot wash cloth, placing over face until cool and repeat 2-3 times. The steam will help cleanse your pores and clean the oil off your face so you don’t need to rub to remove the oil.
Olive oil is amazing for getting off makeup and stubborn mascara; doing the oil cleansing method is perfect replacement for makeup remover. (Not only are you using natural ingredients, you’re skipping a step in your night routine and being eco-friendly all at the same time!)

Olive Oil Hair Mask:
Massage the oil into the ends of your hair and work towards the roots – you really don’t need that much at all; a quarter-sized amount or less. I’ll usually leave this on overnight, wrap my hair in a bun and shampoo out in the morning. It really makes a difference in the smoothness and manageability of the hair. It also seems to work better leaving overnight to allow time for the oil to sink in and it seems to shampoo out better then rinsing and washing directly after.

I’ve also mixed the oil with pureed bananas – bananas seem to have a specific effect with moisturising dry hair and skin. As well as mangoes! Check out this post and try it for yourself, I swear this combination works!

Olive Oil Nail Care:
Olive oil is really moisturising and makes the perfect cuticle and nail solution. Usually when applying to my hair or skin I’ll just rub into my cuticles but you can use a small amount specifically for that – really makes a difference!

There are many other ideas and solutions, but these are the main ways I use them; I switched to natural beauty products specifically to cut down on the amount of products I use and to simplify as much as possible, so I try to use as little ingredients as possible. But you can always experiment and add any other essential oils, fruit, oatmeal or anything really you want.

    • ..There are ideas above how to apply it. You can definitely apply to your face at night, especially if you wear makeup and to clean your face of the oil from the day. If you don’t shower at night just rub the olive oil in, over the sink, and once you feel it’s penetrated the skin enough, rinse with warm water. Or you can do the deep cleansing method stated above. There is no difference really in treating your face with an oil at night or in the morning.

  1. I tried this today after reading it yesterday and it worked like a charm! My face feels AMAZING. I feel like I don’t even have to put cream on it, that’s how nice it feels! Definitely worth a try for anybody reading this.

  3. What is the best way to get olive oil out of your hair with out having to wash it with something damaging or more than once. I’ve tried using it in my hair but its so hard to get out and leaves my hair feeling greasy… Any tips?

    • I usually use shampoo, the brand is Live Clean and they’re pretty natural but they do have chemicals. The best bet would be to use baking soda. Mix 1 tbsp. baking soda + 1 cup of water. Squirt onto hair and rinse, it will leave your hair feeling really clean. Also, only try using the olive oil starting at the ends, working up and stop right around the ears or just below, as the top of your hair is going to have more oil anyways. As well (and I’m not sure why), try to apply the olive oil the night before (put in a bun) and rinse the next day, it seems to come out easier and leaves the hair so much softer.

  4. I’m a big believer of using oil (almond oil in particular, though I have used olive oil on occasion) on the skin as a moisturizer…and I have oily skin! For years I didn’t touch it because I was afraid it would make me break out, but it doesn’t. Now that I do use it, I wake up in the morning and my skin is soooo soft. And you’re right, it’s very economical.

  6. I always add a couple of teaspoons olive oil to my bath. It really helps with the dry skin on my legs. I think I might try out your cleansing method for the face too!

  7. Olive oil is such an amazing substance and with so many healing and nutritious properties! I also like to use coconut oil for similar uses. And they’re both so much cheaper (and better for you) than name-brand moisturisers 🙂 – Niki x

  8. I’ve finally found a post about using oil as a facial cleanser. I’m a little hesitant about trying it, though the thought of using oil to cleanse your face is fascinating. How long have you been using EVOO as a cleanser?

    • About 2 years. Before I used it, anything with “oil” written on it never came close to my face. But since switching over and using that as a cleanser has changed my skin so much – it used to be really oily everywhere except my cheeks which were dry, now everything is soft and doesn’t get near as oily as before. There are some days or weeks when I don’t use any and when I switch back I see an immediate difference. I would really recommend trying it!
